Letter to my pen pal in Israel
We are absorbing news flashes from Israel like a sponge.

We live in a really huge forest and know and understand the dangers that accompany that lifestyle, so we are wondering how close to the confligration were you, and if any of your friends or family suffered losses. Fire is the thing we most fear, here.

We were suprised that wilderness fire fighting in Israel was lacking. Our firefighting consists of volunteers with paid superior officers. Every little town here in the forest has a firehouse and when we have a problem they work together. The firehouse in the next town moves up closer to the next empty firehouse to cover for those firemen who are in the front lines.
They raise money for firefighting equipment by sponsoring events in the summertime - like BBQs or ball games - and everyone attends and enjoys the fun. In the end we have a system that has worked for us over many many years.

Please keep me posted.

If you have someone who would like to come here to see how we do things, please let me know. I can make arrangements and they can stay here with me or even with some of the volunteers.

Here on the lake, we purchased a special fire boat. The local firemen know where it is and what equipment it houses. You can take a look at www.saranaclakefire.com. They have an equipment link. See also www.uppersaranac.com

Love to you, be safe
eMolly

Hi Molly dear,

Thanks for your concern. I and my family and friends are all OK.
My family is in the Tel-Aviv area.
My town - Karmiel (not Carmel), is located 40 Kilometers ( 25 miles) north of Haifa
and the Carmel mountain reserve where the fire took place.
Yes indeed - this was the biggest fire in Israel's history, taking 42 lives,
burning some 6 million trees, destroying hundreds of homes,
evacuating 15,000 people,
and raging over an area of some
50 square kilometers. (Almost 12,500 acres of forest fire...).
I think we have it under control now.
Allow me not to write about the lacking of fire -fighting
equipment, aircrafts and budgets. It is very upsetting to me
to say the least. After this tragedy the subject will never be the same here.
Thank you for the interesting links and once again, for your concern.

Be well, Molly.

Hugs,

Avi

Just thinking about the good old days in SLVFD. (Early 1990s) Talking about some of the fun I had there with some co-workers. Wife and I would love to move back when I retire in 9 years and 7 months, but who is counting. Keep Safe.

I miss the department, it's members and my home town. I moved to VT to serve in the Vermont State Police in 1983. Retired from the VSP in 12/2007 with 25 years of service as the Lt/Station Commander of the Derby Station. Currently serving the US Dept of Homeland Security, US Border Patrol as a Supervisory Sector Enforcement Specialist at the Swanton Sector. I haven't been home to SL in over a year but hope to make a trip this summer and will stop in to say Hi. Stay safe, I am proud of you all.
